Coal is sometimes refered to as "buried sunshine" because it came from plants that originally absorbed energy from the sun.  When we burn coal, we use energy that was trapped millions of years ago.

Along with oil and natural gas, coal is considered a fossil fuel because it traces its beginning to organic materials that were once alive.  Some coal contains fossils or impressions.
